Top Building Information Modeling (BIM) Trends in 2022

BIM is an integral part of today’s modern construction projects.  Agon Coordination is one of the leading MEP BIM consultancy and service providers in the New York, Philadelphia, Austin, and Atlanta areas.

We use Building Information Modeling (BIM) to assist owners, general contractors, design teams, and sub-contractors to solve major issues ahead of time and with a pathway to a buildable solution moving forward.

Here are a few new BIM trends that you want to pay attention to:

Laser Scanning:

BIM has definitely shown its strength in the new construction projects that are popping up all over the country.  BIM gives you that from scratch approach with designing a building and its components, but what about existing projects?

Scanning an existing building has become more and more prevalent as we’re working on buildings that need updates to modernize their functions without destroying the pieces that make it historically relevant.

Laser scanners are used to create point cloud representation of what currently exists on site.  These scans provide a level of accuracy previously unattainable with having someone document the position of certain systems, architectural features, or structural members.  The accuracy becomes inherent as the scans give feedback down to millimeters.

Once a site is scanned, you can use this information to then model on top of to allow for solutions to problems that were hard to figure out or impossible to approach because there was always a question of what could be engineering around the existing environment.

BIM consultants can provide the point cloud as well as a BIM model that will provide solutions to existing issues that owners and general contractors are trying to navigate around.

Currently, the trend of using laser scanning is being paired with another technology that could become a game changer for keeping jobs on track as phasing construction.

Boston Dynamics has teamed up recently with Turner Construction to provide a solution of attaching a laser scanner to one of Boston Dynamics dog robots, loving named spot.  Spot has been present on construction sites lately scanning jobs are they progress.  Giving owners and general contractors a true up to date snapshot of where installs are going. Pretty cool technology if you ask us!

Issue Tracking Software:

The BIM Coordination process has fully integrated itself into modern construction projects.  As we move further into this integrated solution to building a building before it’s built, we have a new look on how we address issues with each other (MEP Coordination Detailers) but also how to flag important design issues.

Spurred with the natural direction of BIM Coordination meetings, the new normal that Covid-19 has introduced to us with how we meet around these issues has now concreted the need for tracking issues that we need to communicate, not only with each other, but the design team.

Software like Revizto, BIM Track, and Construction Cloud (native within Autodesk) have provided a third-party solution to keeping track of ball-in court measures of how we pass along issues to the respecting party that needs to help with a solution.

I like to call it pre-RFI software, as it allows us to communicate the issue and get a solution to the issue before it becomes an item that needs to be addressed in the latest construction documents where it could possibly cause a need for a Change Order to a sub looking to take advantage of a situation.

BIM Consultancy

BIM Coordination is not a college course or major where you can hire someone directly out of school to coordinate a job fully.  So where do you find the people that you need to do the type of work that the general contractor needs you to contractually perform?  You call us, Agon Coordination.

Agon has the experience in the world of BIM Coordination to help you solve your BIM needs.  Agon Coordination is one of the leading MEP BIM consultancy and service providers in the New York, Philadelphia, Austin, and Atlanta areas.
